The Antiques Road Show July 8 2017
My Gypsy Camera had the exciting pleasure to attend (and get some inside shots) of the Antiques Road Show. Here's how it works: Everyone stands in loooonnngg line and goes to a table where they hand you tickets for the type of appraisal that you'll need. i.e. paintings, furniture, metalworks, etc. That gets you into another room and within this room is a large studio surrounded by high walls with open areas all around the studio denoting where to stand for your particular appraisal. You stand in that line until they give you the go ahead and you enter the large bustling studio and go to a table that have appraisers who look at your item. Each has a laptop and light in front of them. So basically they try to look your stuff up online (just like you would do at home). Unfortunately, they couldn't determine the artist of my lioness painting from 1913 but gave it an appraisal of $400 -$700 as-is but maybe as high as $1000 if I had it cleaned and repaired. And even more it the artist is a known artist. I paid $26 for it at Goodwill. The bust was a total bust. No artist signature or who it is. So less than $100. If they like the item you brought in, then they send you into a private room where they do makeup on you and then send you to the center and side areas that have the cameras to do the interview. I did get to snap a picture of Senator Claire McCaskill and got my picture with appraiser Nicholas D. Lowry the guy that wears the funky clothes. I also made their Twitter wall screen along with my bust...I mean my statue. All in all it was a awesome unique experience and it only took 1.5 hrs.
